Well I know that I will get more brick backs than pats on my back for writing this. But these are just concepts in my head most of the time when the discussion on pets comes up. These are only and purely my opinion and you can hold me responsible for the black and white you see here. Have put my thoughts in three concepts, the pet, double standards and selective compassion. Read on...
Concept 1: The Pet
I am totally against the concept of a pet. Animals are supposed to do what they want to do and when they want to do. Pets are not free animals, pets are like dolls of a kid, they get to follow the routine of the owner. They will get to eat when owner comes back from work, they get to go out when the owner decides it's time for the animal to go out. Controlled life is not defined for animals, see what Oxford Dictionary states while defining animals "They are typically able to move about, though this ability is sometimes restricted to a particular stage in the life cycle".
Just imagine a situation where you are offered to be pet of another person. Weird right? although I would not mind being a pet in a rich mansion and get pampered, I am sure am not going to last long there since I am totally unwilling to sacrifice my freedom of daily excretory needs and dietary constraints.
There are famous celebrities who have had human pets, the first name which comes to my head is of Gaddafi who was known for his libido and extraordinary set of women in his harem. Hmmm so the concept of humans having humans as pets is illegal, I think since all animals are gods creation and equal, having pets should be illegal. If it is illegal to have a lion as a pet, then how is it OK to have a cat as a pet? right?
Concept 2: Double standards
I know many pet lovers who have dozens of cats and dogs at home and who are pure nonvegetarians. I mean those who would gobble up a whole chicken and can not do without non veg even for a single day. But their animal love is only for a special sect of animals, like for example dogs. When I engaged a person who had a dog as a pet but loved nonveg, about dogs being staple diet in many parts of the world. He totally lost it, he did not argue on the lines of you do not love pets does not mean that you come up with strange logic of man eating dogs. It is so wrong for people to eat dogs, dogs are that, this etc... But according to me even chicken or sheep are animals and should be respected with the same vigour and love right?
Concept 3: Selective compassion
I thought of writing this blog because I saw a posh lady who had two stray dogs sitting in the car with her. I thought wow, lucky dogs they are getting pampered inside an AC car and am sure they had lavish lifestyle compared to their country cousins. Since the traffic was high and the signal more than 180 seconds, I could observe that she was pretty well to do. I saw a beggar who knocked on the car door with a baby stringed to her. Personally I do not encourage begging like I do not encourage keeping a pet. But the compassion that woman showed to the dogs inside her car never was shared with the baby and the mother outside. OK I agree that shee to discourages begging... but did the dogs asked her to help them? or was it voluntary? or was the compassion involuntary? right?
