THURSDAY - THE STORYTELLER 5. FRIDAY - THE MENTOR 6. SATURDAY - TODAY 7. SUNDAY _ HOLIDAY Intro For over three decades, I have believed that culture is not built by performances alone, but by the spaces, institutions and communities that make those performances possible." From theatre to cinema, from radio studios to cultural institutions, my journey has never followed a straight line. Every role I have taken on—actor, director, writer, trainer, broadcaster or organiser—has grown from the same belief: stories have the power to transform people, but only when artists are given spaces to create them. While I have had the privilege of working across theatre, film, television, radio and public speaking, my greatest satisfaction has come from buil...

Use and Need of Obscenity and Cultural ethos defining the change

Disclaimer: I wrote a series of articles for an online magazine called Cheers between 2004-2006, am putting them out here since I found them in Lockdown 2.0 Use and Need of Obscenity and Cultural ethos defining the change ‎ 20 ‎April ‎2004, ‏‎10:53:58 The play's promotional campaign reads, "Persons below 18 years will not be admitted".  It opens to a bunch of curious audience who get to see audiovisual images, which they are used to seeing on TV or in Movies.  Nevertheless, they are disturbed and could not believe their eyes and ears.  This is common with plays, which are purely for adults.   But this is true with most of the plays, which are being staged worldwide.  There has been a separate category created for such kind of plays called In-Your-Face Theatre.  There are many exponents for this play and this started as a parallel theatre culture to converse with the audience in more realistic and hard-hitting way. We could trace the history of this not...

Watch your words: all eyes on Home Theatre

Watch your words: all eyes on Home Theatre Nalme Nachiyar Artists are often considered a restless lot, used to ideating, experimenting, creating and presenting their work to the audience regularly. So when the lockdown forced people indoors, the arts scene took a massive hit. Concerts cancelled, galleries shut, performances and stage shows put indefinitely on hold. The film and TV industry too came to a grinding halt, leaving thousands of daily wage workers without any income. But in midst of this crisis, the more fortunate members of the arts and entertainment fraternity also saw an opportunity to adapt to newer mediums and forms of expression. For actor and theatreperson P D Sathish, or PD as he is better known, it came together in the form of Home Theatre, a video book series. A first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the project has brought together popular names from the Kannada TV, film, theatre and literature scene. “When Covid-19 struck, all our plays got cancelle...

NHVPS Theatre Workshop

The Selfie post performance It was a pleasant surprise when I got a call from NHVPS for a non PTM discussion.  I was happy that the school chose me to do a workshop with the children from 9, 10 & 11 to introduce them to theatre and probably do a performance by end of the workshop.  We did pretty interesting times in 21 sessions I took over there, the last five being the rehearsals for the final performance.  I thanks NHVPS for this opportunity & hope the kids who survived till the last day will do some theatre somewhere & remember me through their performance. For the final performance we chose a small story "A letter to God" from and laced it up with songs from my times to the ultra modern times making it easy for the kids to blend in.  The script I created from the story is below... & CLICK HERE for the Video of the final performance... ________________________________________________________________________ A letter to God ...
