Hosabelaku Play Songs ka Story :)

We at Prakasam trust staged a play "Hosabelaku" to bring in audiences to our new found auditorium in Basavanagudi called Kala Soudha.  This is a song from that play.  Play is directed by PD Sathish Chandra, Re Written based on the movie & novel (Movie directed by Dorai-Bhagwan and novel written by Ms. Vani) by Chandan Shankar and music is by M Rangarao. Lyrics: Kuvempu (teredide mane) & Chi Udayashankar (all other songs), Singer: Dr. Rajkumar, S Janaki, Vani Jayaram.  For further information on us and on the play please log on to prakasamtrust.org/hb

When we started this production the intention was to entertain & also bring in new audiences to watch our production.  Because the audiences we were targeting were from areas around Kala Soudha, our new auditorium and were naive and not exposed to theatre and we did not want to shock them with a heavy play.  So we came up with this play took permission from the director of the movie Bhagwan and the novel publishing house.  Am posting the videos here and also sharing directors note about each song after the original video is posted.  Generally we had lot of limitation since it was stage and we could do a maximum a minute run of the song.  With all the limitations this is the final product.  Would love your feedback since we have so far got tremendous response for all songs in all the shows of Hosabelaku.

RAVI NEENU AAGASADINDA (from our play)

This was a melodious song which comes in the play when both Ravi & Vatsala have realised their love.  Since the Vatsala in the play is completely different than the Vatsala in the movie or in the novel we had to make her smart and show the change in her personality from being a victim to be a refugee.  She is trying to find her love Ravi in our song and finally finds him, Ravi actually has to put effort in getting Vatsala to him which is slightly evident in this song.  When I heard the song after a long time during the planning of the play I had imagined Dr. Raj coming running in slow motion when his aalap starts, but to my surprise he is rowing a boat when the aalap happened.  Our Ravi Khuldeep was not too sure of the slow motion run but he got maximum whistles and applauds for that move of his :) Now watch the song from the movie

CHELUVEYE NINNA NODALU (from our play)

This is my favourite songs from the movie where Ravi has decided to come back to Bangalore and in our play design this happens after a brief but highly tactful scene with his Delhi boss Sharma and he refuses the riches offers to him by him & a generous offer by Latha who wanted to marry him.  This is his coming home song but play also turns little blunt end to Ravi post this song where he becomes the puppet of the house members and specially of Vatsala.  We edited the song since we wanted Latha to go out of the picture and Vatsala to enter the scene.  Since song had a ready-made line where Latha could exit we used that and presented it like above.  Below is the original song FYI

HOSABELAKU MOODUTIDE (from our play)

We devised eight scenes for the play.  Since the length and breadth got little overboard we decided to cut a lot of elements which were similar to the movie plot we edited the dialogues and cut two scenes.  Luckily the movie had six songs which we decided to use each song at end of each scene.  This song saw heave choreography from the time we conceived it, first I did a bit of choreography, then got team's good friend M G Srinivas took time of his movie Topiwala to come and choreograph.  When we had two good dancer friends Roopa & Rohit pitched in the extra's concept with Ravi.  But this gives the true essence of the play which is bringing in new light.  Here you can see our Ravi impersonating Dr. Raj which was our tribute to the legend himself.  We even retained the mike with the cable just like Dr. Raj in the song from the movie. Go click below and see him in action...

NEENAADE BAALIGE (from our play)

This is the crowing glory song of our play.  I needed this song to be mushy mushy since Ravi & Vatsala have decided to take the next step with or without permissions form elders or any one else concerned to their families.  So we open the song with complete darkness and the stage sees a candle light lighting up and song ends in the spot.  Visually it was very appealing and romantically aesthetic.  By far the whole team has liked this song as the best of the play.  With Khuldeep & Meghashree this song looks classier too.  Now lets see what the movie makers did with this composition...

TEREDIDE MANE (from our play)

This the best way to describe or illustrate how a poem should be made into a song & shows the profoundness of M Ranga Rao and creativity of our states iconic poet Kuvempu.  We heavily depended on the choreography and concepts of the movie for this song.  We had a window in the set where we establish the step mom coming to know of the schemes of Vatsala & we decided to use the same for this song, just like in the movie.  I insisted that I want a veena for this play since its used in the song & had trouble finding it.  But training them how to use the veena was the fun part.  We thoroughly enjoyed all songs and specially this since there was a heavily loaded comedy scene just before this song.  After this song play turns serious till the end and this marks the final turning point of the play, from here on what happens on stage is not in the movie nor in the book.

TEREDIDE MANE (from the movie) please help me find it I could not find the original video

  1. Kannada theatre definitely needs more productions like this. Critics might call it commercial & all that, but it surely introduces more people to watch plays & who knows hopefully changes their sense of entertainment as well. A step in the right direction!!

I The Revenant!! (I live to tell the tale)

I really have no idea what to title this, tryst with destiny, final minutes, death at doorstep, light after darkness, reincarnation, second life, how I cheated death, My Life = 1300 Rs, I The Revenant, Sea rescue... But I am sure why I am writing this, I do not want to forget anything which happened on this day. It was early hours of Sunday, December 18, 2016, day after we had Mahpeede Mahablu show in Baindur.  We wanted to go to the beach till sun rises, come back get ready and leave to Bangalore at any cost before 10 AM after breakfast at 9 AM.  So we slept late, since we were in the same beach till 11 PM.  We went in at around 6.30 AM and tried to get into the sea at point 2 in the image below.  Later we realised that the current here is too much of the Sumana or Baindur river, force of the river was enough to make the sea water less salty.  This is clear sign that the current is super strong.  Looking for a suitable location, we moved to location...

My Article on Kannada Theatre Scene

Kannada Theatre Scene Ninth Century AD: King Nrupatunga wrote Kavirajamarga in the matured script of Kannada. It is the first recognised literary work by any author in Kannada history. Being a set of poems it was recited to people at numerous literary gatherings. Hence, we could also categorise it as the first script in Kannada literature. Kannada theatre has seen a huge wave of changes from the times of Jaina Works, Vachana Literature, Dasa Sahitya till today's Modern Kannada. When you go to the new look Ravindra Kalakshetra with improved interiors and exteriors and interact with the Kannada theatre activists, you get the same look and feel, as it was many years back. You still get to see the old scripts, which are, staged every week and meetings/readings going on in the Samsa Open Theatre. However, when you ask them the question of this article "what happened to the new age writers, why are we going back to the age of Shakespeare or of Karnard?" Everyone unanimously a...
