I saw the Joker... these are my notes...
1. I love Jack Nicholson he is my favorite, he is the quintessential comic book Joker, his makeup, gags, weapons & the purple suit, with the perfect Joker laugh. He was fearless & crazy AF. He for me still makes all other jokers very silly and lame. He made Joker look the way he should look, altered face, permanent smile, is more surprised to see Batman than scared. Batman in the late 80's was saved by Joker in box office too. In four of the Batman movies from 89, 92, 95 & 97 they stuck to the formula of famous names for villains. That got us to see Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, Uma Thurman & Dr. Freeze - Arnold Schwarzenegger. These movies broke the jinx of poorly made Batman in TV series to big screen. "This town needs an enima", oh yeah we all think like this about our towns...
2. Heath Ledger made the Joker more scary, you wish he loses and sanity prevails. He makes you hate the Joker, and that is what he is supposed to do. He did not have the gags, weapons but he did have the laugh, voice modulations & purple suit. He is more scheming and planned than JN, but not as crazy though. He was the Joker whom Batman was clearly scared of & is unable to defeat. He seems invincible too with his acting. "Why so serious" sent chill down my spine too.
3. Jared Leto got into to the hep or hip-hop or youth pleasing zone. Although I liked how he pulled the character upto the Bat's level, he did miss the joker gags. He had all modern weapons, no creativity there, but he had the best Harley Quinn who was on par with him. "I am an idea" was my favorite line of JL. He was good, because he had Harley.
4. Joaquin Phoenix was the weakest joker, for the first time you take pity on a character who is supposed to kill for the fun of killing. Yes he has acted very well but with total injustice to comic book and classic fans of DC and Batman. He is weak, mentally ill, terminal and suicidal, completely full of self pity & over references of other such movies. Coincidental to the plot of burdening references Robert DeNiro plays Murray Franklin, who also plays the lead role in Taxi Driver, a movie the current Joker took heavy references from. He was the guy who gave fans the idea that Joker should be Gay, that would be disastrous... because Harley then would not exist... I liked the line "is it only me or is it getting crazy out there"???
