Being Indian v/s The Moment

That was an ordinary day like any other, had a not so stressful day at shoot. So had taken out my laptop & was doing some research on 26/11 attacks. Also saw lots of tweets by RGV, movie trailers & was appreciating the craftsmanship of RGV. Performances of Nana & the boy who plays Kasab were impressive. Read a lot of positive feedback about the movie everywhere. Even I saw the small but well discussed tweet conversation & the bonding story. Was really moved by how the Maula song illustrates the madness of terror & terrorists. It got me to think about their life, why & how anything like this was possible.  Soon it was evening tea break, few more scenes were shot, pack-up was announced & was coming back home. The peaceful & usually crowd-less residential area of Raja Rajeshwa...

Crackers "to burst or not to burst"

When we were young crackers were a luxury & was rationed like many things those days, like cement, bajaj chetak's etc. My fathers youngest brother Gopanna used to do the collection from my dad & eldest brother Gundanna aka Doddappa to buy crackers. He was an over organised man for his age. He used to buy exact number of crackers to the last bijilee & sparkler.  We were 14 kids in the joint family representing excietement equal to 10 timess what my daughters have now. It was division of cracker time on the eve of Balipadyami, the first day of deepavali. We boys got all the dhaam dhoom crackers & the girls got the sparklers, flowerpots etc. We had to split crackers later on for Bali Padyami, Narakachaturdashi & a small little lot for tulasi puja which falls after a month after Deepavali. I was always the first one to run out of crackers & then eye on the crackers of other cousin brothers, sometimes stealing them too. On the first day me & favorite cousi...

Vaaranna, what is in the name?

This name ವಾರಾನ್ನ (Vaaranna) is peculiar even to many Kannadiga’s now since the concept and tradition are long gone from the urban centres. This was an urban concept for most of its lifetime and the name literally means Weekly Rice. This was started by rich and good Samaritans who decided to give a day’s meal to poor kids who have come to the city for higher studies. The concept was very simple, the poor boy goes to home no one on Sunday, goes to home number two on Monday and home number seven on Saturday. These boys normally would spend time with the women folk who used to serve them their three square meals a day. The gossip of one house used to go around to the other and likewise. Extra gossip from the eighth house onwards was shared by Vaaranna boys used to join in their educational institutions and the gossip of the neighbourhood used to spread. We too are the Vaaranna boys of Bangalore, we not only will live out the old tradition but we shall in turn give you the weekly me...
